Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay grew up with her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to be creative and inspired by the arts. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art could serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a moral compass and urged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and was raised. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. While she was an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating to broadcast journalism. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to watch the home of one of the jurors of the jury as well as go through their garbage. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay began her work as a junior assistant to publicity at a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. In 1999, she founded her own firm of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she started various marketing and lifestyle websites including The Urban Beauty Collective.
