Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to become creative and instilled by art. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit the day to literature, art as well as theater, among other things. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was well-informed and taught her how to utilize the arts to find a way to express her feelings. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the iconic civil rights demonstration through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by community of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was were later the inspiration to create a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She then attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to sit at the home of one of the members of the jury and take a look at their trash. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided that she would switch to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
